Rastagarians unite! It’s Reggae Week!

Calgary, Alberta – This weekend, August 14-15, Reggae legends and rising stars from Canada and the world will descend on Shaw Millennium Park for Western Canada’s premiere reggae music festival. The Calgary International Reggae Festival celebrates its twelfth year with a weekend of music, food and culture.

 

The Calgary International ReggaeFest presents another talent rich lineup for this year’s festival. European Reggae Music star Ziggi Recado, legendary Reggae veteran Tinga Stewart, Nigerian-Canadian vocalist Omolara and many more will play the main stage on Saturday, August 15.

 

On Friday, August 14 Rastagarians will get a sample of what ReggaeFest has to offer with a night of high-energy performances at Shaw Millennium Park from Canadian pop-ska heavyweights, The Steadies, international rising star Nattali Rize, and Montreal’s Auresia. Entrance is $10 at the gate or free with a ticket for Saturday’s show. Performances begin at 5:00 pm until 10:00 pm.

 

Come soak up the sun and cool off with some ice cold drinks in our Village Brewery patio.

 

ReggaeFest kicks off this Thursday, August 13 with two Reggae-related events:

 

Reggae Downtown from 12:00 noon – 1:00 pm: on Stephen Avenue Walk there will be a lunchtime performance by Jory Kinjo at the Stephen Avenue Stage.

 

Reggae Workshop Presentation and Movie from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm: visit Cardel Theatre for a multi-media presentation on Rasta and Reggae: The Global Impact AND a movie Roaring Lion: The Rise of Rastafari. Admission is free with a donation to the Food Bank.

Taj Weekes injured; new artiste announcements

Dear Family,

 

We regret to inform you that due to a serious leg injury, St. Lucian performer, Taj Weekes cannot travel and will not be performing at this year’s Calgary International ReggaeFest. Please join us in sending Taj positive vibes and well wishes for a speedy recovery.

 

But where one door closes another one opens up.

 

We are thrilled to announce two additional performers to the ReggaeFest line up. Kafinal, a rising star on the Canadian Reggae scene in Toronto will be making the last minute trip to put on a show for Rastagarians. Known affectionately as “Canada’s Festival King”, Kafinal is an exciting and engaging performer with a great sense of humor. Check out Kafinal’s special musical shout out to all Rastagarians.

 

Also joining Kafinal on the ReggaeFest stage, is Calgary’s own Dubwise. Dubwise are a reggae, funk, and soul fusion band that will keep the crowd dancing to reggae classics and some original work.

 

We are truly blessed to have such a wealth of exceptional Reggae talent in Canada. Please join us in welcoming Kafinal and Dubwise to the Calgary International Reggae Festival for the first time!

Dubwise (Calgary, AB)

Dubwise is a high energy Reggae, Funk and Soul Band from Calgary. Though relatively new, Dubwise is no stranger to the music industry. Their focus is on making an impact in the music scene through performing a wide range of everyone’s favorite Reggae classics as well as original music written by Supa Cee. Dubwise performs a standard serving of Reggae with a side of Dancehall infused with Soul. They opened for Luciano The Messenjah on his recent trip to Calgary and all of the members have a wide and varying background in the music industry. As a band, Dubwise’s common goal is to make good music and entertain their audience.
